Avenue Q” is a Tony Award–winning musical that blends puppetry, comedy, and sharp satire to explore the ups and downs of young adulthood. Created by Robert Lopez, Jeff Marx, and Jeff Whitty, the show premiered Off-Broadway in 2003 before moving to Broadway, where it became a hit for humour and catchy songs. The story follows Princeton, a recent college graduate, as he moves into a New York neighbourhood populated by quirky human and puppet neighbours who are all trying to find their purpose in life. Notable cast members have included John Tartaglia, Stephanie D’Abruzzo, Rick Lyon, and Ann Harada. Notable numbers include “It Sucks to Be Me” and “There’s a Fine, Fine Line”.
In Avenue Q, the line “It’s a sign!” comes from the song “Purpose”, sung by Princeton as he struggles to find direction after finishing college. When he notices a penny on the ground with the same year as his birth, he excitedly takes it as a message from the universe – a hint that he’s on the right path and that his search for purpose is leading somewhere meaningful.
This design features Princeton’s puppet hand holding a penny with the year that Avenue Q debuted written on it. This coin is a huge driver for him throughout the show and this pin is therefore the perfect way of celebrating this show!
