Waitress the Musical

‘Waitress’ is a musical based on the 2007 classic indie film of the same name. The show features music and lyrics by pop singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles and a book by Jessie Nelson. And fun fact: it was the first musical on Broadway to have women in all four of its top creative roles! It opened on Broadway in 2016 starring Jessie Mueller, Drew Gehling, Nick Cordero, Keala Settle, Kimiko Glenn and Christopher Fitzgerald and then on the West End in 2019 with the cast including Katherine McPhee, David Hunter, Peter Hannah, Marisha Wallace, Laura Baldwin and Jack McBrayer.

The story follows Jenna Hunterson, a waitress and pie chef who feels stuck in the life she is living. She feels trapped in a loveless marriage with her abusive husband Earl with baking being her only escape. But when she unexpectedly becomes pregnant, and begins an affair with her new doctor, Jim Pomatter, her life becomes even more complicated. In looking for a way out, she feels that a pie baking contest and the grand prize may be her last chance for happiness. With the help of her workmates and best friends, the endearingly eccentric Dawn and the unapologetically sure-of-herself Becky, along with the lessons learnt from her mother, Jenna tries to find a way out of her small town calamity.

It Only Takes a Taste

‘It Only Takes a Taste' is a song shared between Jenna and Dr Pomatter as they are sat on a bench waiting for the bus. It’s the first song they sing together and the whole thing is a metaphor about trying new things. In their case, they are illuding to the fact that have romantic feelings for each other and want to explore a relationship despite the fact that at first listen they sound like they are singing about pie.
