Dear Evan Hansen is a modern musical based on the 2018 novel of the same name. The show gained popularity fast with current productions on Broadway, the West End and multiple tours. The musical features songs written by song writing duo Pasek and Paul best known for their work on ‘The Greatest Showman’, ‘La La Land’, ‘James and the Giant Peach’ and ‘Dogfight’. The Original Broadway Cast for this instant hit includes Ben Platt, Laura Dreyfuss, Will Roland and Mike Faist, but some other fan favourite cast replacements are Jordan Fisher, Alex Boniello, Andrew Barth Feldman and Mallory Bechtel.
The story follows Evan Hansen, a high schooler with severe social anxiety as he tries to connect with his fellow classmates. His therapist suggests that he writes letters to himself detailing how his day will be good, but there is a mix-up that ends up having the whole school believing that the letter was between Evan and Connor Murphy, a deceased student who was very troubled. This misunderstanding results in Evan in the middle of this tragedy and left to console the grieving family by pretending that he and Connor were best friends. He enlists the help of Jared, his sarcastic, slightly inappropriate “family friend” to fabricate emails to and from Connor to show to the rest of the Murphy family and the school. As Evan spirals deeper and deeper into the lie, we meet characters such as Zoe, Evan’s crush and the sister of Connor, and Alana Beck, a genuine and encouraging overachiever determined to make sure no one is invisible, along with each of the parents from both the Hansen and Murphy households. But what happens when his lies start to unfurl?
‘Connor Finished the Milk’ is a phrase that is said by Zoe Murphy to her parents. It’s featured in the first song in soundtrack ‘Anybody Have a Map’ sung by Cynthia Murphy and Heidi Hansen. The mothers struggle with trying to connect with their sons and the fact that their families are falling apart. The Murphy family are sat eating breakfast when the conversations stumbles into argument and picking on each other leading to Zoe’s line: “Connor finished the milk!”
