‘Moulin Rouge!’ is the smash-hit jukebox musical based on the 2001 film of the same name. The musical features a book by John Logan and in a similar fashion to the movie, a score comprising of original music and popular tunes including music that have been written and released in the years since the film was made. ‘Moulin Rouge!’ made it’s Broadway debut in 2019 and stunned audiences with its glitz, grandeur and extravagance and winning multiple Tony awards.
This story takes place in the Montmartre Quarter of Paris, France, during the Belle Epoque at the turn of the twentieth century. The Moulin Rouge is the infamous nightclub where Bohemians, aristocrats, boulevardiers and mademoiselles go to experience a world of indulgence and unparalleled extra. The show tells the fictional story of Christian, an American aspiring writer and composer searching for inspiration. He finds a muse in Satine, a beautiful and talented cabaret actress working at the Moulin Rouge. As a secret romance blossoms between them, their world crumbles around them. The Moulin Rouge’s owner and Master of Ceremonies, Harold Zidler, is willing to do anything to save it… including promising Satine to the Duke of Monroth, a wealthy but entitled and controlling patron of the nightclub in return for an investment into the Moulin Rouge’s future. But his hindrance to Christian and Satine’s tumultuous love affair is not the only difficulty the two must face…
‘The Sparkling Diamond’ is the title belonging to the star performer at the Moulin Rouge, the dazzling Satine. This design is inspired by her esteemed title and the costume she wears when we first meet her, a glittery outfit with a diamond-studded corset. She sports this crystallised costume as she descends from the ceiling on a trapeze swing, singing the medley ‘Sparkling Diamonds’. Featuring black sidepieces, silver glitter and the screen-printed accents to mimic the intricate beaded detail on the bodice of Satine’s Sparkling Diamond costume, there truly is no better way to celebrate this spectacular show!
