Matilda the Musical

‘Matila’ is the fan-favourite musical based on the 1988 Roald Dahl book of the same name. Adapted to the stage by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and directed by Matthew Warchus, this show quickly worked it’s way into theatre-goer’s hearts. Starting with a twelve-week trial run by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, ‘Matilda’ opened on the West End on November 24th 2011 and two years later made it’s Broadway premiere on April 11th 2013. Due to it’s captivating book and catchy score, ‘Matilda’ is a musical theatre staple and has become a popular choice for school and community productions across the globe.

The story circles on Matilda, an extraordinary little girl with extraordinary powers. Born into a family that doesn’t appreciate her wit and intelligence, Matilda finds solace in her books and storytelling. Things don’t get any better for her when she is faced by a cruel, tyrannical headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, a woman who lives by the motto: “Children are Maggots”. She finds a companion in her caring but fragile teacher, Miss Honey. Matilda must find the bravery to stand up to the all the adults bullying her, rallying her fellow classmates to revolt against the evil Miss Trunchbull and reclaim her life from her selfish parents. This musical plays with the chaos of childhood while distinctly encouraging the power of imagination.

This design is inspired specifically by the much-loved song ‘Revolting Children’. This phrase was originally used by Miss Trunchbull as an insult towards Matilda and her classmates, however, at the pinnacle of the show, when the children decide to stand up and revolt against their horrible headmistress they use this insult and redefine it, thus taking back the power. Instead of meaning disgusting, “revolting” now refers to revolutionary. And so it becomes their battle cry.

This black nickel pin, inspired by the popular phrase uses the iconic letter blocks on a open book to epitomise the show. The details of the bookmarks and dog-eared pages inspired by the little girl who encouraged this uprising.
