‘The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical’ is a high-energy, action-packed stage adaptation of Rick Riordan’s best-selling young adult novel The Lightning Thief, the first book in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. The musical premiered Off-Broadway in 2017 with a score by Rob Rokicki and a book by Joe Tracz before making its Broadway debut in 2019 at the Longacre Theatre. The show quickly earned a dedicated fan base for its energetic rock music and witty lyrics, drawing praise from fans of the original novels for its authentic portrayal of the characters and themes.
The story follows Percy Jackson, a teenager who discovers he’s a demigod, the son of Poseidon. After being expelled from yet another school and surviving a monster attack, Percy learns the truth about his divine heritage and is sent to Camp Half-Blood, a training ground for demigods. When Zeus’s master lightning bolt is stolen, Percy becomes the prime suspect. To clear his name and prevent a war among the Greek gods, Percy sets out on a dangerous quest across the United States with his friends—Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, and Grover, a satyr protector. Along the way, the trio encounters mythological creatures, battles ancient enemies, and unravels secrets about Percy’s past.
‘Normal Is A Myth’ is a phrase used in the song ‘Strong’ by Sally Jackson, Percy’s mother. She is comforting and encouraging her son after he’s been expelled from yet another school. He believes his life would be different if he was “normal”, however throughout the lyrics of the number, Sally explains how there’s no such thing as normal and different can be fun and exciting! This lyric captures the heart of the musical’s message: ‘Normal Is A Myth’.
This design perfectly encapsulates both Percy as a character and the show as a whole by featuring his sword, Riptide, and Poseidon’s trident with a wave. The ribbon across the pin is the same orange as the Camp Half-Blood and if you look closely, the ends of the banner resembles a lightning bolt!
