‘Bandstand’ is a rousing, golden-age style Broadway show that blends the exuberant energy of 1940s swing music with a deeply emotional story about life after war. With an original score by Richard Oberacker and a book co-written by Oberacker and Robert Taylor, the original Broadway production opened in April 2017 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre and featured a stellar cast led by Corey Cott and Laura Osnes. The show was directed and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler, the Tony Award-winning creative force behind Hamilton and In the Heights. Notably, Bandstand was the first musical to be certified by Got Your 6, a nonprofit dedicated to accurate and empowering portrayals of veterans in media. Its commitment to authenticity and respect for veteran experiences set it apart as a uniquely heartfelt and historically conscious Broadway musical.
Set in 1945, the musical follows Donny Novitski, a World War II veteran and musician, as he forms a band with fellow vets to enter and compete in a national radio contest. But as the band chases a dream of fame, they each confront the invisible wounds of war and the challenge of finding purpose in peacetime America. The story offers a fresh take on the traditional war musical as it blends the glitz of the post-war swing era with the raw reality of returning home from war, capturing themes of hope, healing, friendship, and resilience.
