Next to Normal

‘Next to Normal’ is the psychological drama rock musical that has redefined the boundaries of Broadway storytelling. With music by Tom Kitt and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, the show premiered Off-Broadway in 2008 before transferring to Broadway in April 2009. It quickly earned critical acclaim for its honest, unflinching portrayal of mental illness and its impact on an American family. The original Broadway starred Alice Ripley as Diana, J. Robert Spencer as Dan, Aaron Tveit as Gabe, and Jennifer Damiano as Natalie, recieving 11 Tony Award nominations and winning three Tony awards. After years had gone by ‘Next to Normal’ had its long‑awaited UK premiere at the Donmar Warehouse in London in October 2023, before transferring to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre for a strictly limited 14-week run starting in September 2024. The entire Donmar cast reprised their roles: Caissie Levy as Diana, Jamie Parker as Dan, Jack Wolfe as Gabe, Eleanor Worthington‑Cox as Natalie, Trevor Dion Nicholas as Dr Madden/Fine, and Jack Ofrecio as Henry. A proshot has been filmed with this cast.

The story centers on Diana Goodman, a suburban mother living with bipolar disorder, and the ripple effects her condition has on her husband, daughter, and therapist. As the family navigates the challenges of grief, trauma, and psychiatric treatment, the musical delves deep into themes of identity, memory, and resilience. Aided by powerful performances, its emotionally raw and honest storytelling continues to resonate with audiences around the world.

I’m Alive

‘I’m Alive’ is a reoccurring phrase from the high-energy, emotionally charged number of the same name, sung by the character Gabe Goodman. Gabe proclaims his vitality and inescapable grip on his mother, Diana’s, mind and memory. The phrase ‘I’m alive’ is both literal and symbolic: though Gabe is no longer physically present, his emotional and psychological impact is undeniably alive within the family. The song represents unresolved trauma, memory, and the illusion of stability, set to a driving rock beat that contrasts with its dark subtext.

This pin features the concoction of pills that Diana is on as mentioned in an earlier song and detailing to resemble the neon purple lit room in the West End production set design to perfectly encapsulate both the song and show as a whole.
