‘Come From Away’ (also commonly referred to as CFA) is the heart-warming musical with a book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein that tells the true story of how a community in Gander, Newfoundland became host to the world following the September 11 attacks. ‘Come From Away’ features a cast of twelve, all playing a variety of roles. Each character is either a direct representation of a real person or a fusion of several real people, but the show focuses on a select few stories throughout. The minimal yet creative staging mixed with the phenomenal writing has birthed a truly unforgettable show that has served as a reminder to many that we’re all part of a global family and empathy is the best way to approach any given situation. Following various workshops and trial runs, ‘Come From Away’ made it’s Broadway debut in early March 2017. The musical was a success from the get-go, receiving praise from both audiences and critics alike, which led to a UK premiere in December 2018 and a West End debut in February 2019.
What started as a normal day in the small town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada took a sudden turn when 38 planes, carrying approximately 7,000 passengers, were ordered to land unexpectedly at Gander International Airport in the days after September 11th 2002. Despite language barriers and possible culture clashes, the town’s residents welcomed these visitors with true selflessness, compassion and generosity at a moment’s notice. For the week following the tragic events that resulted in the temporary American airspace closure and rerouting of so many planes, the Islanders and Plane People built lasting connections in spite of the fear and uncertainty felt by all. ‘Come From Away’ is an extremely memorable musical that conveys how it must have affected everyone in Gander when the population doubled overnight and how they banded together to house, clothe, feed and befriend nearly 7,000 stranded strangers. It’s the story of how we are all capable of immense kindness for each other, especially in the darkest of times.

‘Dat’s a moose’ is the iconic CFA quote from the song ‘On the Bus’, the sixth song in the soundtrack. At this point in time, the Plane People have recently landed and are being driven by bus to the temporary housing set up by other residents of Gander. Two locals act as bus drivers and impromptu tour guides, intending to somewhat ease the weary, frightened passengers. Both drivers suddenly hit the brakes, causing an instant stop… why? Because there’s a moose in the road! Hence the quote that has featured in this design: “Ya, dat’s a moose!”
Using the blue and yellow colour scheme associated with this phenomenal show combined with inspiration from weathered road signs and bus headlights, this pin is the perfect way to celebrate your love for all things ‘Come From Away’.
