Hairspray

‘Hairspray’ is one of those musicals that pretty much everyone loves. But unknown to a lot is the fact that it has had quite a journey. First was the 1988 original film, after that came the 2002 Broadway musical and then a film adaptation in 2007. From screen to stage and back again. The Original Broadway Cast included Marissa Jaret Winokur, Laura Bell Bundy, Kerry Butler, Mary Bond Davis, Matthew Morrison and Corey Reynolds and when it came to the West End in 2007 with Michael Ball, Leanne Jones, Rachael Wooding, Ben James-Ellis, Adrian Hansel and Tracie Bennett taking on some of the lead roles.

Set in the 1960’s, ‘Hairspray’ tells the story of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and big dreams who strives for fame. Tracy aspires to dance on The Corny Collins show and win the heart of teen heartthrob Link Larkin, the lead male dancer on said show. After some difficulty and a lot of interference from scheming mother-daughter duo Amber and Velma Von Tussel, she lands a part dancing on the show and becomes a much-loved celebrity overnight. With the help of the adorably dorky Penny Pingleton, the sassy but wisdom-filled Motormouth Maybelle and talented dancer Seaweed, Tracy attempts to use her popularity and status to evoke social change. Can she campaign for integration on the show and make a difference? It’s a fun, colourful musical that shares a message of inclusivity. That no matter your age, weight or race, you should follow your dreams and stand up for what you believe in.

Welcome To The 60’s

‘Welcome To The 60’s’ is a song introducing Edna Turnblad to the world around her.  Tracy’s mother classes herself as a big, unfeminine lady and because of this, refuses to leave the house. After Tracy becomes a celebrity, she shows her mother that everyone can be accepted. She brings Edna out of her comfort zone to introduce her to all the fun that can be had when you let yourself live and that it’s ok the be yourself. Inspired by Ultra Clutch hairspray, the product that sponsors The Corny Collins Show and appears multiple times in the musical, our pin uses colours that both complement the show, and are bright and funky to celebrate the 60’s.
