Wicked

‘Wicked’ is the much-loved theatre classic that has been viewed by over 11 million theatregoers! And that’s just on Broadway! This is a show that has sparked many theatre obsessions since it’s debut in 2003. With music by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman, the musical retells the 1900 novel, ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ by L. Frank Baum and the 1939 staple movie musical ‘Wizard of Oz’. The Original Broadway Cast (OBC) of Wicked starred Idina Menzel, Kristen Chenoweth, Norbert Leo Butz, Michelle Federer and Christopher Fitzgerald. Similar to ‘Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Wicked’ is one of those shows that has given many actors and actresses their big career debut.

‘Wicked’ is the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West. We know her as a villain, but who is she really? Elphaba Thropp is a misunderstood but young girl, but there is a major difference between her an everyone else… she’s green. She crosses paths with the popular, blonde-haired Galinda (also know simply as Glinda) and the two become unlikely friends. Despite their differences, namely Glinda’s unflinching desire for power and fame and Elphaba’s determination to be accepted as she is, they embark on many extraordinary adventures throughout Oz. Along the way you meet characters such as the wonderful Wizard, Elphaba’s non-green sister Nessa, Dr Dillamond, Madame Morrible and popular party boy Fiyero. But how do the two friends become Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West?

Pink Goes Good With Green

‘Pink Goes Good With Green’ is a statement that Glinda says to Elphaba (also nicknamed Elphie) during the song ‘Popular’. This song is all about Glinda attempting to make Elphaba a well-liked, popular member of the Ozian society, but instead of accepting her as she is, tries to change her to look and act the typical beauty and popularity standard. None of her ideas end up working, so Glinda takes the pink flower that she is wearing and places it behind Elphaba’s ear… “pink goes good with green”. Out of all her attempts to make this green girl “more popular” this is the only one that Elphie has appreciated because it doesn’t change who she is. Instead it complements her biggest insecurity. The colour of her skin. This tiny flower makes her feel beautiful.
