‘The Addams Family’ is the kooky, comedy musical based on the characters created by Charles Addams for his 1964 cartoon comedy series. Since the premier of this ghoulish family through this show, numerous adaptations of these characters and their macabre ways have been created, from live action and cartoon films to books, video games and eventually a Broadway musical in April 2010. The original cast for the musical included Nathan Lane, Bebe Neuwirth, Krysta Rodriguez and Kevin Chamberlin however the production closed December 2011 before embarking on a national tour. Years later in 2017, the musical would make its premiere in the UK with a cast starring Cameron Blakely, Samantha Womack, Les Dennis, Oliver Ormson and Carrie Hope Fletcher bringing these characters to life. Due to its clever book and catchy music, ‘The Addams Family’ has become a favourite for avid musical theatre fans and a popular choice for school and community productions across the globe.
The story follows a slightly older set of characters, mainly the eldest daughter from the morbidly eccentric Addams Family. Wednesday is now a teenager who has found herself dating a normal boy named Lucas from a regular family. When she invites her boyfriend and his parents over for dinner, the rest of her household find it difficult to get along with the strangers they find at their dinner table. On top of this, Wednesday and Lucas are keeping a secret. Some people get suspicious and through subtle manipulation and lots of hijinks are determined to find out what the two are hiding. Can the parents stuck in their own ways, from two separate worlds find a way to blend for the sake of their children? What secret could they possibly be keeping?
In an effort to force Wednesday into spilling her secret, Morticia suggest that the family play an Addams Family favourite, a game they call ‘Full Disclosure’. In the form of a song, each person around the table has to confess something and then take a sip from ‘the sacred chalice’. This skeleton chalice design with glow in the dark features (and some mysterious potion dripping down the side) is the perfect way to celebrate this spooky musical!
