The Sound of Music

‘The Sound of Music’ is the beautiful 1959 Rogers and Hammerstein musical that is an all-round theatre classic and the last show that the two ever collaborated on. Featuring many familiar songs and based on ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers’, the 1949 memoir of the real Maria Von Trapp, this musical quickly became one of the most well-known, widely loved musicals of all time. The original Broadway Cast (OBC) included Mary Martin, Theodore Bikel and Patricia Neway, although some fan favourite cast members from the Broadway revival are Rebecca Luker, Laura Bernanti (this show was her Broadway debut), Patti Cohenour and Fred Applegate. However, most people will remember this show from the iconic 1965 film adaptation of the same name starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

Set in Austria towards the start of World War II, ‘The Sound of Music’ follows the story Maria Rainer, an adventurous, slightly rebellious, young postulant at an Austrian Abbey. While Maria decides whether she wants to become a nun, Mother Abbess makes arrangements for her to get a job as a governess to the seven motherless children of a retired naval officer by the name of Captain Georg Von Trapp. But this household is less than happy… Captain Von Trapp struggles with the loss of his beloved wife which affects his relationship with his grieving children, but the determined Maria makes it her mission to win their hearts and bring light, laughter, music and joy back into this family. Will she be able to mend the family dynamic? Can she rid the house of their military rules and restrictions to create a light and happy home? What happens when Austria gets taken over by Nazis?

Climb Every Mountain

‘Climb Every Mountain’ is one of the many famous showtunes from this beloved musical. Sung by Mother Abbess to close the first act, this piece of music is an anthem to inspire dreamers everywhere, sharing the message that encourages people to take every step in the effort to achieve their goals. With a nickel pin inspired by the iconic film poster, there could be no better design to celebrate this incredible work of art!
